Why We Give

When we think about giving, we think in terms of three areas: tithing, sacrifice, and responsibility. The tithe is a guideline for believers during the Old Testament period to give a tenth of their income to honor and worship God. It is rooted in the belief that all that we have is provided by God. So the tithe is an expression of love of God and gratitude for His generosity when we give back one tenth and by default, keep nine tenths. In the New Testament, tithing is less specified but we know we have the ability for greater responsibility with greater generosity on this side of the Cross. The Macedonian Christians demonstrated sacrifice, for some “gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord” (2 Cor. 8:3 ESV). The Antioch believers, observing the needs of the Jerusalem church across the sea, responded with a strong sense of responsibility and love. Everyone “according to their ability” sent relief to their fellow believers (Acts 11:29).

It’s important to explain why we give. Giving is a joyful response to God’s grace. The Macedonian Christians gave in the midst of severe affliction and extreme poverty, with an abundance of joy in their giving (2 Cor 8:2). The subject of giving is not as a command, “but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:8-9 ESV). The mark of gospel centered giving, instead of giving to win favor from God, is that Christian giving gives out of a desire to give as generously as much as one has generously received.
